Part of becoming a great broadcaster is having a great vocabulary and finding ways to vary your verbiage. That is why a regular feature on this site will be “Announcer Alterations” where we take short clips of pre-existing play-by-play synced to video and come up with five different ways to call the same sequence of events.
In my time covering low level college basketball I didn’t have the chance to call many dunks. For that reason I went back in the YouTube library and dug out Blake Griffin’s vicious dunk on Kendrick Perkins and the accompanying call from Brian Sieman.
Original Verbiage:
Vinny Del Negro wants a whistle, nothing coming. Paul, finds Griffin inside. OHHHHHH MY GOODNESS…..Has lightning struck twice….Blake Griffin May have just Mosgov’d Kendrick Perkins.
And Five Ways To Alter The Call
Paul goes right off a Griffin Screen. Bounces to Griffin on the roll to the left. Rises up and slams it home with one hand!…… Blake Griffin tells Kendrick Perkins to look out below! What a dunk!
Paul attacks right off a screen from Griffin. Threads a bouncer to Griffin on the roll. Attacks the rack….And brings Thor’s hammer down on Kendrick Perkins! Oh what a jam!
Paul uses a Griffin pick. Slides a pocket pass to Griffin towards the cup. Annnd BOOM SHAKALAKA! That was a monster dunk straight from NBA Jam. Metaphorical flames raining down on Kendrick Perkins!
High pick and roll with Paul and Griffin. Paul finds Griffin. Cocks it back AND CRUSHES THE CUP LIKE A FRAT BOY! Blake Griffin defies gravity and puts Kendrick Perkins on a poster!
Screen and roll. Paul attacks high side. Pocket pass to a rolling Griffin. Explodes off the floor AND TRIES TO RIP THE RIM DOWN ON KENDRICK PERKINS WITH A ONE HANDED SLAM!
